Former airport firefighter. Self-taught, about six years in. In 2026, after my body and mind gave out, I stopped waiting for commissions and turned to my own tools, my own work, and films about Japan's makers.
The first test on any job. If I wouldn't watch it again, I don't shoot it.
Choose the music, cut to its tempo and mood, and decide the color last: the color that brings the day back.
When I was small, my grandmother's house burned to the ground in the middle of the night. My uncle said, “I'm going to wake Grandma. Wait in the kitchen,” and the five minutes until he came back felt like forever. I still remember, vividly, the fear of the flames closing in. For me, memory was film from the very beginning.
I once told someone about changing schools again and again as a child, never quite making friends, growing up without much of a family's warmth. The reply: “Maybe you make films because you're lonely.” It stopped me. Digging into my own life may be the way into the work.
Lately, stories of parents and children, of family love, bring me to tears. My ideal ten years from now: wake up, walk with my partner, make her coffee, work only in the morning. I can't drink coffee myself, so I make it for her and drink something else (laughs). The memories I want to keep on film and the life I want have the same shape.
At the airport there were almost no call-outs, just training every day. Everyone through the gate together, everyone out together. I couldn't stand that kind of group life. What drew me instead was thinking for myself and making something on my own judgment. At first it wasn't work at all. Shooting, editing, finishing a piece was fun, and that was enough.
Ten things I hold to every time I make a film.
“I'm not someone who makes videos. I find the value in a person or a business and translate it into a form that reaches people.”
“I make films that leave memory, not information.”
Before deciding what to shoot, I think about what needs to be told.” My habitual question: “Why do you do this?”
“I don't build from surface information. I meet people and dig into their history and intentions before I shoot.”
“I find the appeal they haven't noticed themselves, from the outside, and put it into words and film.”
“Making a video is never the goal. I work backward from what should change once it exists.”
“‘Because it's trending’ or ‘because others do it’ is never a reason to make something.”
“Films for people and businesses that have real value but haven't been able to show it.”
“A film by an overseas creator hit me so hard that I started by buying a camera and a PC.”
“I keep thinking there must be a better form. That's where the quality of my work comes from.”
I used to start with ‘What kind of film do you want?’ Now I always start with ‘Why do you want to make it?’ That is where the axis of the film is set.
Who they are. How they speak, the words they hold dear, the air around them. Trust first.
Why they started, what they've protected. For a business, its founding and turning points. For a person, the reasons behind their choices.
Not the surface but what lies beneath: the thing that shapes who they are. Find it, and it becomes the theme of the film.
What they share: I planned them myself, made them with people I love, and the harder they were, the deeper they stayed in memory.
The first film I planned from the theme up, the first I directed, made with people I chose. Full of the slow motion I'm known for. The inn loved it, and it became my first repeat commission.
Posted, it drew praise from around the world. Someone who traveled to Japan to buy a piece said the film made the decision. The memory behind Akane comes from this shoot.
An ensemble drama about human desire, set at the end of the Edo period. My first time writing and directing; I gathered every member of the crew myself. Aiming to finish this year and enter next year's short film festivals.
I wanted the sword fights to look as cool as possible. Six months on sound effects and cuts alone; the sound built from nothing. A landowner lent me a mountain for free, and it was shot in a single day. It became the seed of Tokoyo ni Saku Chi.
A piece I planned and directed by feel. Many of Takarazuka's craftspeople took part. This job led to the Wakamizu film.
What I value isn't view counts, but what the people who watched went on to do.
Takaya Kato, a potter of more than forty years, talks about what kept him going when things didn't go well. Posted with English subtitles, it drew comments from potters around the world. Played on the gallery monitor, it led two visitors, from New York and Poland, to buy a Setoguro tea bowl. “The film made the decision.”
The story of a farmer who started natural cultivation at thirty with no experience. Thanks arrived from Japan and abroad: “Thank you for growing such delicious tea.” “Magnificent story!” Posted in Japanese, English and French.
Built on what the inn holds dear, refinement and warmth, down to the pinwheels in the building and the meaning of its name. “Thank you for thinking it through that far.” Posted on the inn's official LINE, it brought a wave of “I want to go,” and a repeat commission.

It's truly wonderful that you show it this beautifully.”
The craft of pottery and the creator's film are perfectly bound together.”
I'm glad this film connected me with the creator.”
Gentle. Straightforward. Hate being bound by other people's rules.
You've got a childlike purity.” “You hardly ever get angry.” “So honest.” “Tell him once and he fixes it.” “Hates to lose.”
Three meals a day. Two or three films a day. Weekly futsal. Two or three hours walking the hills and riverside on days off. Cooking.
始まりは『Watchtower of Turkey』。About Time, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones. Spielberg, Nolan. It all started with Watchtower of Turkey.
I overthink. What doesn't interest me tends not to reach my ears. So I've decided to listen to the end. Sometimes it turns out to be surprisingly interesting.
“Do I truly want to make this?” “Is it fun?” I'm done putting up with things.
Wake up and go for a walk with my partner. Talk about nothing much, enjoy the scenery. Back home, make her coffee and talk over the day's plans. I can't drink coffee myself, so I just make it (laughs). Wrap up work after about two hours in the morning. Cook dinner and eat together. Before bed, say what I was grateful for today, and sleep. Every day like that would be good.
